The Archdiocese of Veszpr\u00e9m is one of the oldest dioceses in the country, founded by King Saint Stephen, and since the time of Blessed Queen Gisela it has maintained a special link with Hungary\u2019s queens: traditionally, the bishops of Veszpr\u00e9m crowned the queens of Hungary, a tradition that lasted until the consort of the last Hungarian monarch, Queen Zita, wife of King Charles IV.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Veszpr\u00e9m is the youngest among the metropolitan sees: on 30 May 1993, Pope Saint John Paul II elevated it to a metropolitan archdiocese by his apostolic constitution Hungarorum gens<\/em>, defining its present territory, which comprises Veszpr\u00e9m County, one-quarter of Zala County, and several settlements in Fej\u00e9r, Gy\u0151r-Moson-Sopron, and Kom\u00e1rom-Esztergom counties.<\/p>\n

The archdiocese has a population of around 460,000, of whom some 300,000 are Catholics. It is organized into four archdeaconries and seven deaneries, comprising 180 parishes, and maintains a number of educational, social, and cultural institutions \u2013 among them Veszpr\u00e9m Archdiocesan Library and Archives.<\/p>\n

Since 2019, the archbishop has been Dr. Gy\u00f6rgy Udvardy, with Dr. Istv\u00e1n Tak\u00e1ts serving as vicar general, J\u00e1nos Szab\u00f3 as financial vicar, and Kriszti\u00e1n Tornav\u00f6lgyi as chancellor.<\/p>\n
